I complained to one of my professors that my poems always came out too witty, not pretty enough, too eager to fit in a punchline. He mentioned a few poets who were well known for being full of wit and made it their trademark yet still I wasn’t convinced. When he told me that maybe poetry wasn’t always meant to be so serious it started to make sense. I was inspired to write more poems that day onward and I have. Some of them with humor, some of them without. Most recently I even started writing raps, which is just spoken word over a beat when you think about it. So maybe I still don’t like my poetry as much as my short stories or prose. But poems are great brainstorming tools and even better entertainment, after all I have to remember not to take them so seriously.
